John Conneely

John Conneely’s musical CV is even lengthier than his trademark beard. With a distinctively gravelly vocal style once described by Hot Press as sounding like “Jeff Buckley, John Martyn and Tom Waits all rolled into one person”, the talented Galwegian has been a stalwart of the Irish music scene for almost 20 years.

A regular performer at Electric Picnic, Body & Soul and other festivals, Conneely has released two critically acclaimed albums with his band Charis, recorded with the aforementioned Martyn (RIP), and opened for such illustrious names as Ray Manzareck, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Nils Lofgren and Sharon Shannon.

Conneely’s influences range from Nina Simone and Tom Waits to Trilok Gurtu and Toumani Diabaté, all of which are reflected in his latest musical venture. John Conneely Inc. features a diverse range of accomplished musicians from Ireland, Spain, France and Italy playing a unique and alchemical mix of jazz, blues, interpretations of classic songs and, of course, some Conneely originals.

Over the past three years, their regular Sunday night residency at Galway’s Roisin Dubh has become the stuff of local legend. No two nights are ever the same. Award-winning music documentarian Myles O’Reilly visited recently and admiringly noted that, “John Conneely Inc. turned the place upside down. It was possibly the best Sunday I’ve ever spent on this Earth… well, in Galway at least!”
